19-Year-Old Charged with Manslaughter in Labasa Incident

A 19-year-old male student from Labasa has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a 49-year-old man.

The victim’s body was discovered on January 19, 2025, lying motionless on vacant land in Naodamu, Labasa. An investigation revealed that the man had been assaulted prior to his death.

According to Fiji Police, CCTV footage confirmed that both the victim and the accused attended a drinking party at a nightclub the night before the incident. Additional footage from the town center showed the victim following the accused after the club had closed.

Witness statements indicated that the accused later assaulted the victim at a known drinking spot. The victim’s body was found unresponsive the following morning.

The 19-year-old has been charged with one count of manslaughter under Section 239(a)(b)(c)(i)(ii) of the Crimes Act of 2009. He is set to appear in custody at the Labasa Magistrate Court later today.
