Students at Fiji National University (FNU) are voicing concerns over the recent increase in accommodation rates, which has significantly impacted their financial planning. The university has increased its dormitory fees from $1,200 per semester to $1,800, raising the daily accommodation cost from $9.50 to $15.
Financial Struggles for Students
Many students, especially those relying on allowances from the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS), are struggling to manage their expenses after this increase. The allowance provided to students has remained unchanged, making it difficult for them to cover additional costs like food, transportation, and other necessities.
A medical student at FNU highlighted the financial strain, explaining that their $3,400 per semester allowance is now stretched even thinner. After paying the new accommodation fee, they are left with only $1,600 for other living expenses. Meanwhile, students who are not on the National Toppers Scheme, and instead receive a $2,500 per semester allowance, are facing even greater financial difficulties.
Student Association’s Efforts
The FNU Student Association has been actively discussing this issue with university management since December 2024, trying to find a resolution that would ease the burden on students. However, despite these efforts, the accommodation rates remain unchanged.
FNU’s Justification for the Increase
In response to student concerns, FNU’s administration defended the increase, stating that this is the first fee adjustment in six years. According to the university, the higher rates are necessary to cover rising maintenance costs, utility bills, and safety upgrades. They emphasized that the changes are aimed at improving student accommodation conditions and ensuring a safer living environment.
While students continue to express their dissatisfaction, the university remains firm on its decision, citing financial sustainability and infrastructure improvements as key reasons for the rate adjustment.
Conclusion
With the rising cost of living in Fiji, students are finding it increasingly difficult to manage their finances. Many are now calling for a revision of TSLS allowances or alternative solutions to help ease the financial burden caused by the new accommodation rates.
