President Taneti Maamau of Kiribati arrived in Fiji for a three-day state visit, leading to temporary traffic disruptions between Nausori and Suva. Authorities had warned motorists about possible delays between 7:00 PM and 7:40 PM on Monday, January 27, as the presidential convoy made its way from Nausori Airport to the capital.
Upon arrival, President Maamau received a warm welcome with full state honors, including a guard of honor by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad, along with other government officials, was present to receive him.
During his visit, the Kiribati leader participated in a traditional Fijian welcome ceremony and met with Fiji’s President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. The discussions focused on strengthening diplomatic ties and exploring regional cooperation between the two Pacific nations.
The Fiji Police Force apologized for any inconvenience caused by the traffic disruptions but emphasized the importance of security measures for the high-profile visit.
President Maamau’s visit highlights the strong historical and cultural connections between Fiji and Kiribati. Both countries remain committed to working together on regional issues and fostering closer relations for the benefit of their people.
