The Lagilagi Housing Project in Suva has reached a significant milestone with the completion of 36 new units, providing secure homes for families from the Jittu Estate informal settlement. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently handed over occupancy offer letters to these families, marking the end of Phase 2 of the project, valued at $2.2 million.
Initially launched over a decade ago by the People’s Community Network Charitable Trust (PCN), the project aimed to offer low-cost housing to Jittu Estate residents. However, after completing 117 out of the planned 153 units, construction stalled. In January 2024, the government entrusted the Public Rental Board (PRB) with finishing the remaining 36 units and managing the estate.
Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the project’s importance in addressing Fiji’s housing shortage, stating, “The Lagilagi PRB flats are not just homes. They represent a commitment to community, shared responsibility, and inclusive growth.”
The PRB’s involvement has been pivotal in revitalizing the project, ensuring that more families now have access to affordable and quality housing. This development aligns with the government’s broader vision of empowering Fijians and promoting homeownership.
As the Lagilagi Housing Estate welcomes its new residents, it stands as a testament to collaborative efforts in providing sustainable housing solutions for low-income families in Fiji.
