School Closure Notice for Northern Division, Lau, and Lomaiviti Due to Tropical Depression TD09F

by Evan

In response to the strong winds, heavy rain, and potential disruptions caused by Tropical Depression TD09F, the Minister for Education, Honourable Aseri Radrodro, in consultation with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO), has announced the closure of all schools in Vanua Levu, the Lau Group, and Lomaiviti on Monday, February 24. This decision prioritizes the safety of students and staff as weather conditions remain uncertain.

Currently, a southeast wind flow prevails over Fiji. As of 3:00 AM today, Tropical Depression TD09F was located approximately 350 km northeast of Cikobia or 440 km north-northeast of Vanuabalavu. The system is expected to intensify gradually as it tracks southward towards Fiji, entering Fiji waters later today.

The system may bring strong to near-gale force winds and an active trough, affecting parts of the country, especially from later today onwards.

The Minister for Education urges parents and guardians to take proactive safety measures to ensure the well-being of their children during this period of adverse weather conditions.

Schools Outside Affected Areas to Remain Open

All schools outside the Lau Group, Lomaiviti, and Vanua Levu will remain open on Monday, February 24. However, parents are encouraged to exercise discretion based on local weather conditions. Heads of Schools should maintain communication with their School Management Committees, District, and Divisional Officers for further updates.

Teachers’ Role and Responsibilities

Teachers are urged to:
Remain vigilant and prioritize the safety of students, colleagues, and families.
Stay informed about evolving weather conditions.
Maintain communication with parents to ensure student safety.
Keep in touch with school heads, Management Committees, and Divisional Officers for updates and guidance.

The Ministry of Education will provide official updates through mainstream media and the official pages of the Ministry of Education and the Fiji Government.
