Three Labasa Youths Charged with Murder of Elderly Man

Three young men from Labasa have been charged with the murder of a 68-year-old man from Wainikoro, Labasa.

On January 23, 2025, the Wainikoro Community Police received a report of an elderly man found dead just two meters from his home. The deceased was known in the area for begging and often carried a box of coins with him.

Following an investigation, police received information about a youth who had used loose coins to purchase liquor from a nearby shop. This lead helped officers arrest the suspect and two accomplices.

The suspects, aged 20 and 22, were interviewed, and police revealed that the three had assaulted the elderly man and stolen his money to buy alcohol.

All three have been charged with one count of murder under Section 237(a)(b)(c) of the Crimes Act of 2009. They will appear in custody at the Labasa Magistrate Court later today.
