Tropical Cyclone Rae Intensifies: Could It Become a Major Storm?

As of 7:04 AM on Monday, February 24, 2025, Tropical Cyclone Rae has intensified to a Category 2 storm and is projected to strengthen further into a severe tropical cyclone later today. The Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) reported that Rae’s center was approximately 80 kilometers east of Udu Point or about 110 kilometers northeast of Taveuni, moving south-southwest at 15 km/h toward the Lau Group.

In response to Rae’s approach, the FMS has issued a hurricane warning for the Moala Group, a gale warning for the eastern parts of Vanua Levu, and a heavy rain warning for the entire Fiji group. Maritime warnings are also in effect, advising caution for all marine activities.

Residents in the affected areas are urged to prepare for severe weather conditions, including strong winds, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding. The FMS emphasizes the importance of staying informed through official channels and adhering to all advisories and warnings issued by authorities.

This event marks the fourth occurrence of a cyclone named Rae in the South Pacific region, with previous instances recorded in 1980, 1990, and 2005.
